Abstract:
Cerium is one of the most active rare earth elements in the lanthanide family, and cerium oxide has been widely used in fields of polisher, decolorizer, catalyst and luminescence enhancer, etc. The spontaneous redox cycle between Ce3+/Ce4+ may generate many oxygen vacancies(V?) on the cerium oxide crystal surface, which can accelerate the charge transfer in the reaction and make cerium oxide have high catalytic activity and oxygen storage and release capacity. The mixed-valence spontaneous redox cycle and the resulting oxygen vacancies have a significant impact on the properties of cerium oxide, allowing it to exhibit unique biomedical activities such as antibacterial,anti-inflammatory,anti-tumor and enzyme mimicking activities, which could be used in the treatment of many diseases. In addition, cerium oxide could be used alone or doped and compounded with other materials to build sensitive sensing materials for the analysis and detection of a variety of substances, which has become a hot spot for domestic and international research. In this review, the theoretical basis of cerium oxide as a sensing material is firstly clarified, while the research progresses of cerium oxide sensing in the fields of electrochemical sensing, colorimetric sensing, fluorescence sensing and chemiluminescence sensing at home and abroad are then summarized, and finally, the status of research and development of cerium oxide sensors are summarized, and an outlook for the future development of high-performance sensors is provided.
